Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania has said that his own party is to blame for the ongoing government shutdown.
As Americans lose their access to food stamps and other essential government services, Fetterman insists that it is the Democratic Party that is to blame.
In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday, Fetterman said that it is time Democratic leaders stepped up and owned the consequences of their actions.
“We are hurting the very people that we fight for. And now we’re getting nothing for them if we continue to keep our government shut down,” he said.
“It is deeply, deeply distressing to know that 42 millions are going to lose their snap benefits,” he continued.
“I feel like the Democrats really need to own the shutdown.’
“I mean, we’re shutting it down. I know why. They claim because they want to address the tax credits. And I fully support that.”
“I do believe many Democrats realize and now Republicans realize that we have to address this and extend these tax credits.”
“I absolutely hope that we do. I fully support these things, but this is the wrong tactic.”
“Right now, by doing this, our government shutdown, we’re getting neither of those things, and they guarantee neither you’re going to get your SNAP benefits, and you’re not going to get those kind of tax credits that we all need.”
”Reopen this thing, and we can find a way forward That’s the way democracy operates for right now.”

Fetterman’s comments come as he continues to break from the Democratic Party line on everything from immigration and foreign policy to the strength of American democracy and his approach to President Trump.
Last month, it was reported that many senior Democrats are planning to oust him when he comes up for re-election in 2028 on the basis that he has not been left-wing enough.
Axios reported at the time:
Democrats haven’t flipped a GOP Senate seat since Fetterman did it in 2022. He’s still popular with Pennsylvania voters, even as Democrats turn on him over his softened approach to President Trump.
Potential Democratic challengers are already bashing Fetterman — and each other — years ahead of schedule.
Some Democratic officials are openly contemplating running against Fetterman or keeping the door open to a Senate bid in the event he retires.
Despite their growing disdain for his more moderate approach, Fetterman still votes with the Democratic caucus the vast majority of the time.
