Rep. Matt Gaetz, R – Florida, is making it known that he would happily support former President Donald Trump in becoming the Speaker of the House if Republicans are successful enough to take back at least the House of Representatives during the 2022 midterm elections.
During a press conference at the Capitol, a reporter broached the subject. “If you do retake the House, would you want ex-President Trump to be the Speaker?”

Without hesitation, Gaetz replied, “I would.”

Pressing further, the reporter asked if this was something that Gaetz had discussed with Trump, to which he responded, “I have.” Unfortunately, when asked for additional details on the former president’s response, the Florida congressman was tight-lipped.
“I keep my conversations with the former president between the two of us,” he smiled.
Traditionally, the Speaker of the House has been an elected representative of the majority party which simplifies the process. However, as former Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows explained, that does not necessarily need to be the case. Meadows also threw his support behind a Trump speakership.
Even House minority leader Kevin McCarthy earlier this year floated the idea of the former president in the position, though he personally believes Trump should re-seek his role as president.
“You know, I’ve talked to President Trump many times, he tells me he wants to be speaker, and I think he should be president,” McCarthy suggested.
Trump himself, when asked about the subject, rejected the idea but not totally: “I’ve heard the talk and it’s getting more and more. But it’s not something that I would have considered but … certainly there’s a lot of talk about it.”
Both critics and supporters believe Trump may announce his bid for the 2024 presidential election, attempting to re-match President Joe Biden after a devastating loss in 2020.
Twitter users, naturally, had their share of thoughts about the idea of Trump as speaker:

“The Constitution does not require that the speaker be an elected member of Congress, but no non-member has ever been elected to the office.“https://t.co/kVCrlWBZFQ
